Science & Technology
Grade K – 2
Fins, Feathers & Fur
Fins, Feathers, and Furs is an engaging educational program that brings the rich diversity of animals in the 1000 Islands and the St Lawrence River to life. Through interactive presentations, discussions, and engaging activities, students will gain a deep understanding of how animals are grouped or classified by similar characteristics. They will come to appreciate that individuals vary within every species, including humans. Students will compare characteristics of some of the major groups of animals, including mammals, birds, fish, insects, and other invertebrates, all the while learning about their habitats and their basic needs. This program is not just about animals; it’s about our local environment and the role we play in it.

Early Settlers
Early Settlers offers students a unique opportunity to delve into the lives of early European settlers and their descendants. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the changes that have occurred in their communities since the early settlers’ time. They will also engage in various exercises and discussions, which will enable them to compare the lives of pioneer and present-day children, as well as life in a pioneer settlement with that in their own community.

Holiday Traditions
Students will be introduced to the idea of traditions and how Christmas is just one of many holidays celebrated during the winter months around the world. They will explore the various traditional celebrations of the Christmas season. Students will also explore the roles of family members during Victorian times and their similarities and differences to families today.

Grade 2 -6
Discover First People
Students will have an opportunity to explore First People’s traditional life and tools, and the knowledge and inventions they shared with the pioneers. This program introduces students to life in a Haudenosaunee village, specifically the Long House. They will discover Ontario’s First People through their legends and traditions. Students will explore the archaeology and history of Ontario’s First People before and after contact with Europeans through hands-on exploration of artifacts and archaeological tools.

Artifacts
ARTIFACTS! is a comprehensive program that provides a detailed understanding of how museums manage and share their artifact collections. The program will guide you through the entire journey of a museum artifact, from the moment it is donated to its eventual display.

Learning to Fly
Have you ever heard the incredible story of the 1000 Islands and the history of flight? Learning to Fly is a curriculum-based educational program at the 1000 Islands History Museum that explores the critical role of the 1000 Islands region in aviation history in the 20th Century.
